The public are reminded not to make too many electrical connections that can cause a fire or turn off unnecessary electricity if leaving the house or building as well as to have and keep a fire extinguisher in the house and know how to use it. The public are also advised to keep an eye on children from playing with fire, do not leave cooking unattended or turn off the gas if not needed.  The warning was issued by the Fire and Rescue Department following 828 fire calls involving houses, buildings, forests and bush recorded in all four districts from January to 31 of March 2024. Based on the statistics shared by the Fire and Rescue Department, among the causes of house and building fires are excessive use of electricity, short circuits, loose electrical equipment connections, wildfires, abandoned cooking, forest and bush fires, and leaking or loose gas hose lines.

 

For structural fires, 9 calls were building fires, 8 in Brunei Muara District and 1 call in Belait District. Meanwhile, 39 calls were house fires which include 26 calls in Brunei Muara District, 8 calls in Belait District, 4 calls in Tutong District and 1 call in Temburong District.

 

As for forest and bush fires, 780 calls were recorded. Out of the number, 507 calls were forest fires and 273 calls were bush fires. Brunei Muara District recorded 271 forest fire calls, 102 calls in Belait District, 133 calls in Tutong District and 1 call in Temburong District. For bush fires, Brunei Muara District recorded 129 calls, 50 calls in Belait District, 90 calls in Tutong District and 4 calls in Temburong District. The total areas affected in the four districts exceeded one thousand hectares.
